What Is the Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome or TOS is caused by compression of the nerves in your neck called the brachial plexus or the arteries and veins that run from your heart into your arm. These structures which we collectively call the neurovascular sleeve can get compressed in several different areas as they pass from the neck into the shoulder and between the collar bone and the 1st rib. This may cause pain, numbness, and tingling down your arm and possibly into your hand.

People may experience this sensation when working over their heads (like when you brush your hair or while painting). It is extremely important for the clinician to determine which area is responsible for the patient’s condition so a proper treatment plan can be developed.
